Today we welcome back to the pod Mark Blyth, Professor of International Economics at Brown University, to talk about the economic crash that is happening parallel to the coronavirus pandemic.

Along with friend of the show Aidan Regan and more than 400 other economists and academics, Mark recently signed an open letter urging the EU to introduce Eurobonds to help European countries get through the pandemic.

Mark explains why this would be a good idea and argues for some other measures that could be taken to address the crisis. Is “free money” an idea whose time has come?

We also discuss whether this shock is even worse than 2008, and if so, whether there might at least be a chance to avoid some of the same lingering toxic political aftereffects of the last crash.
