In case you don’t know, ‘Where Is George Gibney?’ is a ten-part investigative podcast produced by Second Captains for BBC Sounds. The series centred on the survivors of sexual abuse by George Gibney, the Irish, Olympic swimming coach in the eighties and nineties, and it became one of the most impactful pieces of journalism of recent years; many new survivors came forward to tell their story, a fresh Garda investigation was launched into the case, and the podcast has been downloaded millions of times in over 160 countries.

The series has also achieved worldwide critical acclaim winning a Banff World Media Award in Canada, a Prix Europa Special Commendation, a Webby Award in the US, a British Podcast Award in the UK, three golds at the New York Festival Radio Awards, the overall prize at the Justice Media Awards in Ireland, as well as earning widespread international coverage in the likes of the The New York Times and The Guardian.

The presenter, co-producer and co-writer of ‘Where Is George Gibney?’, Mark Horgan will discuss the making of the series with one of our favourites, the editor of The Journal, Sinéad O’Carroll, and the two will be joined by a host of special guests such as Gary O’Toole, Johnny Watterson and Tric Kearney.

Again all proceeds from the night will go to One In Four, to help with their incredible work supporting survivors of child sexual abuse. The producers became aware first hand of the crucial work done by One In Four during the production of the series

Maeve Lewis, CEO of One In Four said:

“The ‘Where is George Gibney?‘ podcast encouraged many survivors to reach out for help and we are delighted that One in Four was able to support them.  We are very grateful to the Second Captains team for undertaking such an important but challenging project.  It has made a real difference to many survivors’ lives and has raised awareness around the world about the terrible consequences of child sexual abuse. The demand for our services is very high and we have a long waiting list. The proceeds from this night at the Concert Hall will allow us to provide extra counselling sessions and reduce waiting times”
