As Dublin melted under a mid-June Sun, Eddie Dunbar hopped off his plane from France and taxied straight into our Sauna/Studio. For a man who had just spent the weeks previously guiding his bike into a seventh place finish in the Giro d’Italia Overall Classification he was surprisingly fresh and what followed was an enthralling chat with the Cork native.

 

Sadly, in the days immediately following this recording, Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder crashed and died in a high-speed crash on Stage Five of the Tour de Suisse – adding extra poignancy to Eddie’s thoughts on the dangers of elite cycling and how he has trained his brain to overcome the ever-present fears.

And – just like that – it’s seven years to the day since Robbie Brady brought us all to our feet in Lille. If nothing else, we’ll always have the past…
