A dark rain-filled cloud hangs over this summer for our nation’s children. Both literally in the form of dark rain-filled clouds and metaphorically in the form of the scandal surrounding the Toy Man. Today they looked on as their totem took the stand.

Plodding through the pain of a few broken ribs, Ken Early was also watching proceedings in Government Buildings and wondering who indeed is “The Most Trusted Man In Ireland”?

Jonathan Liew – friend of the show, bard of the boundary and Guardian sports writer – joins us to talk about this year’s Ashes – billed beforehand as possibly the most exciting series since 2005 and somehow living up to that lofty billing.  We talk Bazball, the nature of sport, winning in style, losing like pricks, and what players and managers owe their sport.

And tonight in Tallaght Shamrock Rovers begin their assault on the Champions League – our resident sea-swimmer recalls his memories of towelling off near Ronan Finn, who (if he plays) will be making his 60th European Club Game appearance.
