It’s been quite a few months for Pakistan’s greatest-ever Cricketer and former Prime Minister, Imran Khan. Having survived an assassination attempt last November this week has seen Khan sentenced to three years in Jail and barred from taking an active part in politics for the next five years. Yet, the man labelled as ‘Taliban Khan’ by some of his detractors remains the most popular man in Pakistan.

We spoke to Ayyaz Mallick, a lecturer in human geography at the University of Liverpool, about the dangerous path Pakistan has embarked upon and how one of the greatest Cricket Players of all time found himself at the epicentre of Pakistani life.

Synth week moves forward. Today we play some Synth tracks composed by World Service Members – but can the Synth Lord and the Fresh Prince of Synth bring themselves to cull any from the crop?

Click the player at the top of the page to play the show. Monday’s shows are free to all and to listen to our programming throughout the rest of the week, join the Second Captains World Service. It’s independent, commercial-free and member-led with feature interviews, breaking news, Ken’s Football Show, Richie Sadlier’s Player’s Chair, The Politics Podcast, The “I’ll Tell You Who Wrote It” Book Club and lots of added extras. You’ll also be supporting the development of our longer-form work, like our recent international series  ‘Where Is George Gibney?’.
