We catch up on some of the latest developments in America laying down the new rules to Europe – before getting to the main subject of today’s pod, which is the federal election due to take place in Germany on February 23rd.

Katja Hoyer is a historian whose books include Beyond the Wall, on the German Democratic Republic, and Blood and Iron, on the German Empire. In addition to working on a forthcoming book on the Weimar Republic and her journalistic work, she runs a Substack called Zeitgeist where she posts regularly on Germany-related themes.

We talk to Katja about what is at stake in the forthcoming election, why Germany is stalked by the spirit of decline, why the AfD have become the second-largest party, and the part passion has to play in politics.
