Spain had about ten days to enjoy winning the World Cup before Ceuta exploded into the headlines. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is still struggling to contain the damage, with people on all sides of Spanish politics furious with his handling of the crisis.
In the last couple of weeks many Spanish football clubs have joined a nationwide t-shirt campaign to signal support for the people of Ceuta. But when Real Madrid’s turn came, Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr and Ibrahima Konate did not fully commit to the protest, rolling up their shirts to obscure the slogan, an action that has outraged elements of Madrid’s support. At Real Betis the Moroccan winger Ez Abde did wear the shirt, which outraged a lot of people in Morocco.
Today we talk to Eoghan Gilmartin about what’s happened in Ceuta, why it has dominated the Spanish news for weeks, what the effects have been on Spanish politics, why Mbappé had a problem with the t-shirt campaign, and how the relationship between 2030 World Cup co-hosts Spain and Morocco is being strained towards breaking point.
