Second Captains is a media production company based in Dublin, Ireland. Set up in March 2013 by Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early, Mark Horgan, Ciarán Murphy and Simon Hick, we specialise in television, online, radio and live show production.
We are to the forefront of this new era of broadcasting and currently produce podcasts The Irish Times Second Captains and The Irish Times Second Captains Football for irishtimes.com as well as the radio show Second Captains Sunday for RTÉ Radio 1 and Second Captains Live for RTÉ 2 television. We also produce live events and work with the most insightful and entertaining names in Irish and world sport.
Our team previously produced and presented the Off The Ball show on Newstalk for eight years, winning a record nine PPI national radio awards.
"quite simply sports broadcasting of the highest quality" - Irish Independent
"terrifyingly good" - The Slate
"It’s hot shit.." - Rob Delaney
The flame-haired flame-thrower of truth anchors our Second Captains football
coverage and co-presents on all shows. Ken is happiest researching FIFA
corruption scandals, dissecting managerial meltdowns or asking Roy Keane
why he left Saipan. Ken also writes a weekly column for The Irish Times and
occasionally contributes to Slate magazine in America.
Ciarán 'Murph' Murphy is a True Gael, sports quiz fanatic and a precocious
broadcasting talent, first cutting his teeth as a goofy teenage freak on RTE's The Grip
before going on to become a regular on every Irish television quiz ever made.
Ciarán is our co-presenter, GAA correspondent, and is the best Brush Shiels
impersonator on the team. He also has a column with The Irish Times newspaper.
Eoin is the chief anchor of our television, radio and online shows, but also finds time
to watch another 40 hours of sport a week. He knows how to switch off though,
by reading newspaper sports sections, playing football, running marathons and
going on sports related holidays. This dedication has made Eoin one of Ireland's
foremost sports broadcasters and a three-time PPI national award winner.
All-time sportsbook choice: Out of My League by George Plimpton.
Mark is our television series producer and radio / online producer.
He is also an audio dreamweaver, intervarsity pugilist and the
best turkey plucker this side of the Boyne. This unique set of skills
also make him a passable Second Captains stand in host.
All-time sportsbook choice: The Gay Talese Reader: Portraits and Encounters by Gay Talese.
Simon is our online, radio and television producer. Having been flushed out the
bottom of the movie extra industry in the late 80's, Simon carved out a career
as a roller blade coach and tanning consultant before his move into broadcasting.
Simon is our rugby correspondent and reporter.
All-time sportsbook choice: Open - An Autobiography by Andre Agassi.
Our podcasts, The Irish Times Second Captains and The Irish Times Second Captains Football have been selected by iTunes as one of the top 10 podcasts in the UK and Ireland of all-time & have reached over 20 million soundcloud plays. They are Ireland's most popular podcasts in any category and also attract a large audience worldwide. Broadcasting twice on Monday & twice on Thursday on irishtimes.com
Second Captains Live is the place in Irish television where sport meets entertainment – where the national obsession is discussed with pride, humour and passion. Over the 5 series so far, SCL has combined big name guests with classic RTÉ archive and features such as Boring Irish Sporting Tweets and the most controversial slot on Irish television, the Good Wall. Filmed in front of an enthusiastic live studio audience, the show was nominated for an IFTA in 2015.
RTE Radio 1, Sundays at 10am. Broadcasting during one of Ireland's most-popular radio slots, Second Captains Sunday's main feature is This Sporting Life, where a special guest explains how sport has impacted on them – for good and bad. They'll discuss playing and watching sport as kids and their passion or otherwise for sport in their current lives. The series ends with Second Captains crowning one of their guests with the prestigious title of Ireland's Greatest Non-Sportsperson Sportsperson.
Begins July 10th 201
